- Rethinking industrial culture
The former "Spinnerei und Weberei Hermann Kümpers" in Rheine is considered an important industrial monument of the Münsterland region. Since 2021, the landmark, built around 1905, has been gradually transformed into a modern urban district. On the 11.5-hectare site, fischer fastening systems are used to securely connect historic building fabric with modern usage.
The design by industrial architect Sidney Stott impresses with its classic brick facade and distinctive stair tower. By approximately 2027, a vibrant mix of residential space, care services, gastronomy, educational institutions, and commercial areas will be created here. The listed building envelope remains preserved as an identity-forming element and forms the social center of the new district.
To renovate the historic facade in a manner compliant with monument preservation and integrate it into the new building structure, the project team relied on the injection mortar FIS V Plus. In combination with anchor rods FIS A M8 x 1,000 and anchor sleeves FIS H 12 x 1000 L, the exterior wall was securely anchored to the newly constructed interior structure. The anchor sleeves enabled targeted mortar distribution in the hollow brick masonry, ensuring a secure form fit while using materials efficiently.
The technical execution of the project was reliably secured through pull tests and professional structural engineering supervision.
The injection system proved to be extremely flexible for the different anchoring substrates – from concrete and sand-lime brick in new construction to masonry brick in existing buildings. To demonstrate load-bearing capacity in the demanding existing building materials, fischer supported the project with technical consulting and pull-out tests.
Through the project support from fischer, it was ensured that the anchors permanently withstand the stresses and requirements for safety and load-bearing capacity.
Thanks to the wide range of system approvals and the high load-bearing capacity, the injection system provides the necessary safety for this demanding construction project. The Kümpers-Areal impressively demonstrates how historic industrial architecture is carried into the future through professional renovation – securely anchored by fischer.
