Anchor point for the future

The pilgrimage church of Madonna dell’Angelo is one of the most important landmarks and oldest sacred buildings in Caorle (Veneto, Italy). As early as the 6th or 7th century, a house of worship is said to have stood on this site – a three-nave wooden church dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The current church with its distinctive bell tower and lighthouse was built in 1751.

According to legend, local fishermen in the 15th century saw a statue of the Virgin Mary with Child floating on a marble pedestal in the sea. Only children were said to be able to lift and carry the Madonna. They brought the statue to the nearby Church of the Angels – the foundation for the Marian devotion still maintained today. The Madonna is venerated as the patron saint of fishermen and seafaring. Therefore, the church is a destination for pilgrims and believers. Every five years, a maritime procession takes place, during which the statue of the Madonna is transported on boats across the sea – an important religious festival in Caorle.

Firmly anchored in a maritime environment

Directly next to the church, the historic pier stretches along the east beach, once used by fishermen for their boats to conduct local fishing and trade. Today, the dock serves both as an access point for small boats and as a place for walks with a view of the sea. Over the years, the pier structure has been repaired multiple times to withstand the high stresses of the marine environment.

For the structural reinforcement and stabilization of the pier elements, the fischer injection system FIS EM Plus was used, applied with the fischer FIS DM S Pro dispensing tool. The epoxy resin mortar ensures high load-bearing capacity in cracked and uncracked concrete. It also guarantees lasting safety and durability in the maritime environment under constant moisture and saltwater exposure – with a rated (ETA) service life of 100 years.

High environmental requirements
In an environment like shipping, where moisture and salt constantly attack the structures, it is necessary to work with a product that can ensure its load-bearing capacity even under demanding conditions, such as in damp and water-filled holes as well as in the presence of seawater.

Solution for the Madonna dell'Angelo Dock

The challenge was to permanently and securely fasten the six berths of the dock for tourist boats.
With the FIS EM Plus, the requirements for a solid and durable anchoring could be met according to the expectations of the engineering firm Studio Ing. Damiani (Caorle) and a long-lasting solution was realized. The chemical fastening ensures high durability – crucial for infrastructure that meets both historical and tourist
demands.

“In addition to the appropriate product solutions, we also offered our customers comprehensive services,” says Mario Allasia. “From planning to implementation, our consultants were available on site. They supported the static design of the fastening solutions, assisted with product selection, and conducted pull-out tests to identify the technically optimal solutions.”

From Legend to the Present

The pilgrimage church and the pier today impressively connect history, faith, and maritime infrastructure. Where fishermen once found the Madonna, modern fastening technology from fischer now secures the historic site and ensures that visitors can continue to experience this unique place in Caorle in the future.
