The longest sea bridge in the Baltic Sea is currently being built in front of the Baltic Sea bath Prerow in the north of Darß (Vorpommern-Rügen district). A railing extending over the entire bridge length of 720 m on both sides protects people and infrastructure. The fall protection was installed using a chemical fastening system from the fischer Group.

An impressive building designed to inspire tourists and locals. The lake bridge is 720 m long, around 4.20 m wide and built on 87 piles. This opens up completely new dimensions for such a construction project in the Baltic Sea region. Service vehicles and rescue vehicles (RTW) are also permitted on the sea bridge, which is as wide as a play street. A traffic light system regulates traffic guidance.

The new building replaces the former approximately 390 m long Prerow sea bridge, which was dismantled for the project. In addition, an island harbour with a usable area of approx. 10,000 m² will be built, which has an elegant teardrop shape. It will take over the function of the emergency port of Darßer Ort, which will be closed and restored. In addition to its main function as an emergency port, the new island port with up to 45 berths will ensure the compaction of the sports port network, for example for sailing, and have a passenger dock. The inauguration and commissioning of the construction project, which has been underway since 2022, is planned for the summer of this year. The developer is the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, represented by the State Office for Agriculture and Environment of Central Mecklenburg.

A professionally designed steel railing compliant with approvals from the commissioned company Norcons GmbH from Sundhagen protects people and infrastructure on the sea bridge. To anchor the railings in the construction of prefabricated concrete parts on foundation pipes, the shipbuilding, industrial and steel construction specialists of Norcons GmbH used a chemical fastening system from fischer, which has a European Technical Assessment (ETA) for the application.

As far as the horizon: The longest sea bridge in the Baltic Sea extends 620 m into the unique sea and measures a total of 720 m. Tourists and locals are “in the middle” of the bridge.

Under the special conditions on the sea bridge, it is also important to seal the borehole against ingress of moisture. The fischer Superbond system thus offers a durable and safe solution for attaching the railing to the Prerow sea bridge.

8,640 fischer Superbond reaction cartridges RSB 12 mini with 4,320 associated anchor rods RG M 12 x 200 in stainless steel were installed. The high forces acting on the railing required a large anchoring depth, which is achieved with two reaction cartridges per attachment point. “With chemical fastening systems, there are no spreading forces when the anchor rods are set,” says Olaf Schinkel, Technical Field Service Region East at the fischer Group, which was involved in the project. “That’s why these systems are particularly suitable for narrow components and anchors close to the edge.” For installation, the steel builders used the fischer RG M anchor rod with a rotary hammer. Both cartridges are ground in the borehole and the mortar mixed and activated. Ideal for harsh winter conditions, wind and waves on the Baltic Sea: The fast curing allowed assembly without waiting time. In general, the installed system permits approval-compliant processing down to -30°C, is approved for water-filled and diamond-drilled holes as well as for seismic applications of performance category C1.

“Chemical fastening systems introduce particularly high loads into concrete and other building materials,” says Olaf Schinkel. "Under the special conditions on the sea bridge, sealing the borehole against moisture ingress is also important. The fischer Superbond system thus offers a durable and safe solution for attaching the railing to the Prerow sea bridge."

In addition to the suitable fastening solution, fischer also supported the construction project with accompanying services. This included the dimensioning of the attachment, which was based on the requirements for the railing design, the geometry of the anchor plate and concrete component as well as the loads acting on it. Taking into account all relevant parameters, the static verification for the chosen anchorage was successfully provided. The services provided by fischer ranged from consulting and dimensioning to on-site support and the successful completion of the railing installation.
